Jannik Sinner continued his campaign at the Vienna Open after defeating Flavio Cobolli in an all-Italian affair.

Sinner has enjoyed a strong return to tour-level action at the ATP 500 event, weeks after being forced to retire from his third-round match at the Shanghai Masters due to cramp.

The world number two cruised through his opening clash in Vienna, sweeping aside Daniel Altmaier in less than an hour.

In the second round against Cobolli, Sinner earned another straight-sets victory, but his compatriot tested him.

After conceding the first set 6-2, Cobolli forced the four-time major champion to a second-set tiebreak, but he could not get over the line in the shootout.

Following his defeat, the 23-year-old took to social media to send a message to Sinner, who is looking to reclaim the Vienna Open title, which he won in 2023.

Sinner also had high praise for his opponent, stating in his on-court interview: “He’s playing an incredible season.

“Improving week after week. He’s one of the few Italians I hadn’t played before. Great, great talent. Great competitor. We both played some great tennis at times.

“I had some chances in the second set but couldn’t use them. I tried to stay in the present moment.

“I tried to play with a great mentality, so I’m very happy about today’s match. I wish Flavio the best of luck for the rest of the season.”

Cobolli has recorded a breakout year in 2025, claiming two ATP titles and reaching a career-high ranking of 17th in the world.

Jannik Sinner’s quarterfinal opponent at the Vienna Open

In the quarterfinals of the Vienna Open, Sinner will be faced with one of three players to have defeated him this season.

His next opponent comes in the form of Alexander Bublik, who triumphed over Sinner en route to clinching the Halle Open title in June.

Sinner did come out on top in their two other meetings this year, however, emerging victorious in straight sets against Bublik at both Roland Garros and the US Open.

The Kazakh star has been in great form during the second half of the season, though, winning three titles in the space of three months.

The two stars will now clash for the first time on an indoor hard court for a place in the Vienna Open semifinals.
