Canadian forward Olivia Smith has made history by becoming the first £1 million ($1.34m) transfer in women’s football, completing a high-profile move from Liverpool to Arsenal ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The 20-year-old, who has signed a four-year deal with the reigning UEFA Women’s Champions League winners, joins after a standout year at Liverpool, where she scored nine goals in 25 appearances.

Although the transfer fee is officially undisclosed, multiple sources report it crosses the £1m threshold, surpassing the previous record held by Chelsea’s £890,000 ($1.1m) acquisition of US defender Naomi Girma, making Smith the most expensive signing in women's football history.
