Sachin Tendulkar breaks silence on whether he is becoming next BCCI president: 'Being considered or nominated…'

“It has come to our attention that certain reports and rumours have been circulating regarding Mr. Sachin Tendulkar being considered, or nominated, for the position of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI),” the official statement from SRT Sports Management Pvt Ltd stated.

“We wish to categorically state that no such development has taken place. We urge all concerned to refrain from giving credence to unfounded speculations,” the statement added.

The post of BCCI president is currently vacant, as Roger Binny had to step down earlier this year after turning 70. Under the board’s constitution, no office-bearer can continue beyond that age. In the interim, vice-president Rajeev Shukla has taken charge as the acting president.

Elections for the office-bearers will be conducted at the upcoming BCCI Annual General Meeting on September 28, and rumours suggested that Tendulkar might be approached to take up the role as a unanimous choice. Adding to the buzz, a recent Dainik Jagran report claimed that a legendary Indian cricketer, renowned for shattering multiple records during his career, was also being considered for the top post.

The trend of former cricketers taking charge as BCCI President began in 2019, when Sourav Ganguly assumed the role. He was later succeeded by Binny, a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team.

Sachin Tendulkar hasn't held any administrative post

It is worth noting that Tendulkar has never held an administrative position, and eligibility to become BCCI president requires being an active member of a state cricket association. As per the BCCI constitution, every former India player automatically becomes a member of their respective state association. However, to contest for any office-bearer's post within the BCCI, a formal nomination from that state association is required.

Tendulkar is widely regarded as the greatest batter the game has ever seen. He holds numerous records, including the most runs in both Tests and ODIs, as well as the highest number of centuries in Test cricket.

While he once held the record for most ODI centuries, Virat Kohli finally surpassed that milestone during the 2023 World Cup. Fittingly, Kohli went past his idol at the former's home turf of Wankhede Stadium in the semi-final against New Zealand.
