Football fans on Twitter heralded Luis Chavez's stunning free-kick for Mexico as the 'goal of the tournament'.

Chavez - who plies his trade at Pachuca in his home nation - fired his side into a 2-0 lead with an astonishing curling effort into the top-right corner of the Saudi Arabian goal.

It was a sensational strike at a time when Mexico needed goals to finish above Poland in Group C at the World Cup.

Luis Chavez's 51st minute strike has already been hailed as the goal of the tournament

Unfortunately for Chavez, the goal wasn't enough as Mexico's 2-1 victory was not enough to finish ahead of Poland on goal difference - despite fans being sent into a frenzy over his goal.

One fan wrote: 'Goal of the tournament settled.'

Another predicted a bright future for the Mexican, adding: 'After that goal, he’ll be in Europe. Goal of the tournament so far.'

A third believed it would be unlikely for anyone to go one better than Chavez over the rest of the competition, writing: 'Mexico has just produced the goal of the tournament there is no topping this banger!'

Chavez's strike came from some 30 yards and his left-footed strike flew into the top corner

And a fourth compared it to Marcus Rashford's free-kick for England on Tuesday night, saying: 'Rashford last night...Chavez tonight. Richarlison has competition for 'Goal of the Tournament''

And one viewer was clearly excited by the stunner, claiming: 'Oh my god that's the goal of the tournament!!!!'

The 26-year-old netted just his second goal in 12 caps for Mexico, and was mobbed by his team-mates both on and off the pitch following the screamer.

Richarlison's second goal against Serbia is another contender for the goal of the tournament

Chavez currently faces a tough battle with Tottenham's Brazilian forward Richarlison for the goal of the tournament award.

Richarlison controlled a fierce Vinicius Jnr cross with his right foot, before turning and jumping before unleashing a left-footed overhead volley to put his side 2-0 up against Serbia.

Mexico still needed another goal in the game after Chavez's free-kick as they were level with Poland on goal difference.

They needed one more goal to go through with Argentina 2-0 up against Poland in the other game.

However, they couldn't find one and Saudi Arabia instead pulled one back, meaning Mexico could only win 2-1.

Mexico have now failed to reach the knockout stages for the first time since 1978 at a World Cup that they have qualified for.
