Everton manager Sean Dyche has shrugged off scathing criticism of his tactics from Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports. Speaking on Monday Night Football, the former Liverpool defender branded some of the Blues’ play in their 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth as “awful” and they were reminiscent of the approach to football from the start of his own career.

Replying in his pre-match press conference to preview Everton’s FA Cup third-round tie against Peterborough United on Thursday, Dyche, who also addressed questions about his own future, said: “I thought Carra was very fair, he said we were like a team from the 90s.

“He played in that era, and I think everyone from that era knows that was probably, arguably, the best era in the current Premier League because of the dynamic, the force in the play to score goals, but also the resistance, not playing 300 passes at the back, playing 300 passes at the back, playing 300 passes up front – if you could – and certainly the teams that those guys played in.

“It’s very rare I’ve done that here... trust me. So, it’s a constant work in progress, we know the stats, we know the facts.

“We endlessly look at the players we’ve got and how we can use them in different roles, which we’ve got to do again of course because it’s still not working.”
