NCAA Tournament second-round preview, how to watch: No. 4 Maryland basketball vs. No. 12 Colorado State

1
The fourth-seeded Maryland men's basketball team rolled into the NCAA Tournament by crushing No. 13 Grand Canyon, 81-49, in the first round on Friday afternoon.

Next up for the Terps?

Maryland (26-8) will face No. 12 Colorado State (26-9) on Sunday in the Round of 32. A win would put the Terps in their first Sweet 16 since 2016 and send Kevin Willard to his first Sweet 16 as a head coach.

Julian Reese led the Terps with 18 points and nine rebounds against Grand Canyon. Ja'Kobi Gillespie had 16, Selton Miguel had 13 and Derik Queen had 12. Queen also had 15 rebounds, becoming the first Terp to post a double-double in the NCAA Tournament since Bruno Fernando in 2019. DeShawn Harris-Smith scored a season-high 11 points.

The Terps also broke their single-season program record for three-pointers made. Willard also set a career-best mark with 26 wins in a single season.

Colorado State, the Mountain West Tournament champion, is as hot as any team in the country. The Rams have the nation's fourth-longest winning streak at 11 games, punctuated by Friday's 78-70 win over No. 5 Memphis, which was only a seed-line upset as Colorado State was the betting favorite. Since Colorado State's win streak began on Feb. 15, the Rams are the No. 11 team in the country, according to BartTorvik. On the season, the Rams are 43rd at KenPom – 40th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 52nd in adjusted defensive efficiency.

Maryland Basketball Scoop: Is Kevin Willard about to strike while his team is hot?

Head coach Niko Medved has brought Colorado State to three NCAA Tournaments in the past four years. Friday marked his first win in The Big Dance. Medved is a candidate to jump to a power conference head coaching job, perhaps at his alma mater and native Minnesota.

All-Mountain West first-teamer Nique Clifford has been one of the country's elite players during this win streak. The 6-foot-6 fifth-year guard leads the Rams in all three major statistics with 18.9 points, 9.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. He shoots 49.9% from the field and 38.4% from deep. In the win over Memphis, Clifford had 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists. He shot 41.4% from three during Mountain West play but was 0-for-6 from beyond the arc against Memphis.

Colorado State's other two leading scorers – Jalen Lake (11.2 points per game) and Kyan Evans (10.6) – make up its starting backcourt. Evans, the point guard, also averages 2.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game and shoots 47.2% from the field and a red-hot 44.4% from three. Evans scored 23 points against Memphis and torched the Tigers from deep on Friday, making six of his nine three-point attempts. Since the start of the Mountain West Tournament, Evans is shooting 63.6% (14-for-22) from three. Lake shoots 41.8% from the field and 34.6% from deep. He scored 14 points against Memphis.

Six-foot-7, 250-pound sophomore forward Rashaan Mbemba and 6-foot-8, 230-pound sophomore forward Jaylen Crocker-Johnson fill out the Rams' starting five. Crocker-Johnson averages 9.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, and he shoots 50.2% from the field and 37.8% from three. He shot 41.5% from three during Mountain West play. Crocker-Johnson scored 12 points against Memphis. Mbemba averages 7.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. He shoots 59.7% from the field and is just 3-for-10 from deep on the season. The Queen-Reese duo is obviously one of Maryland's strengths, and the pairing has a huge height advantage over the Rams' starting frontcourt.

In terms of big man depth, Colorado State also brings 6-foot-11 sophomore center Nikola Djapa (2.4 points and 1.5 rebounds in 7.4 minutes per game) and 6-foot-9 freshman forward Kyle Jorgensen (4.2 points and 1.9 rebounds in 13.3 minutes per game) off the bench. Jorgensen scored three points in eight minutes against Memphis, and Djapa did not score in seven. The Rams could potentially need all hands on deck against Reese and Queen.

Colorado State's sixth man is a player Maryland fans are familiar with, former Purdue guard Ethan Morton. Morton averages 3.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game and shoots 51.1% from the field. He is 1-for-14 from three on the season. Morton did not score in 15 minutes against Memphis.

The only other Rams to play against Memphis were guards Bowen Born and Keshawn Williams. Born averages 4.9 points in 14.8 minutes per game and shoots 37.4% from the field and 32.6% from three. Williams averages 5.1 points in 13.8 minutes per game and shoots 50.4% from the field and 38% from three. Born scored four points in nine minutes against Memphis, and Williams did not score in three minutes.

The Terps have had a special season thus far. They can not overlook a scorching Colorado State team with one of the best players in the country, but the facts are the facts: Maryland is only one win over a No. 12 seed away from its first Sweet 16 in nine years and a crack at top-seeded Florida. Maryland needs to take care of business Sunday night and book its ticket to San Francisco.
