Essendon is pleased to welcome Toby McLean as a Development Coach for the 2026 season.

The 2016 premiership player featured in 102 AFL games for the Western Bulldogs across a nine-year stint as a player before transitioning into coaching ahead of the 2024 campaign.

McLean has spent the last two seasons as Midfield Coach for the Dogs’ AFLW outfit over the last two years to emerge as one of the competition’s most promising young coaching prospects.

The 29-year-old is excited to be on board with the Bombers and taking the next step in his coaching career.

“I'm really excited to be joining the Bombers as a Development coach. To have this opportunity is incredibly exciting and I can’t wait to get started,” McLean said.

“I’ve been through plenty of highs and lows - injuries, setbacks, and success, so I believe my playing and coaching experience will help connect with the younger players.

“We’ve got a young and talented list which excites me, and I can’t wait to see them grow in 2026 and help them reach their full potential.”

GM – AFL Daniel McPherson said McLean’s appointment adds a fresh perspective to the Club’s coaching panel.

“Toby's recent experience as a player provides great relatability for our young group, and we’re excited about what he can add to our coaching group,” McPherson said.

“Toby will take up a newly created hybrid Development Coaching and Welfare Support role. His playing background, recent coaching experience, and strong interest in player welfare, make him an ideal fit. Toby will have a sharp focus on our first-to-third-year players, and for that group to have the opportunity to work so closely with a recently retired premiership player, will be of great benefit.”

“There have been a number of new starters join our football department recently, which has brought a lot of energy to what’s already an exciting build into our pre-season. We’re looking forward to having Toby start with us next week, just in time for the Draft.”

McLean will fill the vacancy left by Travis Cloke, who has finished up his time as Development Coach after two years in the role.

“We thank ‘Trav’ for his contribution to the footy club over the last two years. He had a positive impact on our players and staff, and we wish him and his family all the best for what comes next,” McPherson said.

Essendon’s first-to-fourth year players formally returned for pre-season training on Monday, with the rest of the playing group returning Monday 24 November.
