Arsenal are weighing up a dramatic swoop for Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers, it has been claimed.

Mikel Arteta's side have held a long-term interest in the England international and were already monitoring his situation, but news of Kai Havertz's latest injury setback has increased the likelihood that the Gunners will head back into the market before the transfer window closes.

Havertz was not part of an open training session at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday and is now facing a spell on the sidelines. Assessments are at an early stage and the timeline on how long he will be out is unclear.

The Gunners are, however, exploring the transfer market to strengthen their attack with Rogers identified as a potential target. Indeed, according to The Sun, Arsenal are plotting a move for the ex-Middlesbrough man.

Rogers would offer high quality and versatility to Arsenal's squad, with the 23-year-old able to play anywhere across the forward line and in the No.10 role. Arteta congratulated Rogers, who scored 14 goals and added 16 assists in 54 matches last season, when he won the PFA Young Player of the Year award in Manchester on Tuesday.

But Villa are determined to keep hold of Rogers. Unai Emery's side have no need to offload more players to meet Premier league and UEFA financial rules after losing Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle for £40m and Leon Bailey to Roma.

Villa value Rogers at £80m and are not expected to entertain offers for under that price. Despite the speculation around his future, Villa want to offer Rogers a new contract in a bid to fend off transfer speculation.

CIES Football Observatory, meanwhile, believe Rogers is worth up to £110m - a fee that would put him among the most expensive Premier League players ever alongside Florian Wirtz and Moises Caicedo.

Rogers has established himself as one of the most sought-after attacking midfielders in English football across the last 12 months due to his impressive form at Villa.

He picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year prize following an exceptional season at Villa Park, beating competition from the likes of Arsenal duo Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri.

Speaking after collecting his award, Rogers said: "It means a lot, especially coming from the players that voted, playing against them. For them to acknowledge me as doing well this year, it hits different and it's a different kind of feeling. It's really nice. I'm so happy and so grateful that I managed win this, and hopefully many more.

"Later down the line, I want to be one of them incredible players that people speak about, so to do that I've got to do what they did and what they followed after. It's a nice recognition but there’s more to win, and I can't wait."
