Aakash Chopra believes head coach Gautam Gambhir has got 'every player he pointed at' and is now under pressure to deliver results, without any excuses.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra believes that question marks will mount over head coach Gautam Gambhir if the team fails to do decently well in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Chopra said Gambhir has been given everything he has asked from the selectors and is now under pressure to deliver results.

Though India won the 2025 Champions Trophy under his tutelage, India’s Test fortunes have fallen off a slope in Gambhir’s tenure, which began last year. India has won just three of the 11 Tests, while also suffering a humiliating first-ever home whitewash and a 3-1 away loss to Australia. In England, India started the first Test well but were exposed for their under-preparedness and lost by five wickets to concede a 1-0 lead.

“There is a lot of pressure on Gautam Gambhir," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel. “The pressure is absolutely mounting. If you look at his performances in Test cricket and red-ball cricket, you will find that he has not won a lot of matches. He has won 2 matches against Bangladesh and one against Australia. However, we lost three against New Zealand, three against Australia and one against England. He has been losing and losing," he added.

“His performance in white-ball cricket has been good. The team has been playing well. But in Test cricket, I think the questions are going to be there. And I think there is a lot of pressure on this series. If this series doesn’t go well, God forbid, I hope it goes well. I really want Indian cricket to do well. But if the England series doesn’t go too well, then there will be a question mark — Where are they going and what are they doing?" Chopra added.

He further said: “Because the selectors feel that whatever team management is asking for, it is being given. The type of player you want, the number of players you want, and the player you are pointing at are being given. So, if this is the case, then you also need to deliver the results. Period. There is no excuse," he added.

Apart from being seemingly in total control of the team without any seniors or influential coaches around, Gambhir has also got his way with some off-field controversial rules that dictate players’ movements and time with their families. A big defeat in this five-Test series will put India quite behind in their aim to secure a World Test Championship final berth, after missing out last time.
