Ange Postecoglou on the Celtic difference he instantly noticed at Tottenham as unseen exit talks revealed

Boss Ange Postecoglou revealed he was hit with a "dare to do" Tottenham mantra when he left Celtic - but claims it was the "antithesis" of the club.

And he revealed that he promised to keep his "frustrations" locked down after talks with his wife before leaving the Scottish Premiership behind. Postecoglou initially proved himself in European football after moving to Celtic back in 2021 from J-League side Yokohama F. Marinos.

He left the club for Tottenham after two successful campaigns - including a Treble in his final campaign in the dugout. During his two seasons in North London he secured a fifth-place finish in his debut Premier League campaign before the Australian lifted the Europa League last term to end Spurs' silverware drought.

But he would be shown the door last summer after a lacklustre domestic performance - finishing 17th in the table. Appearing on The Overlap, former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher asked: "You've obviously got great experience as a manager, managed all over the world at certain clubs. Is Tottenham different to those other clubs in terms of getting what you want onto the pitch or sort of looking to take the club forward?”

The 60-year-old lifted the lid on the instant issues he faced following his Celtic Park departure. He responded: "They're all unique.

"They're all different but when you walk into Tottenham, what you see everywhere is to dare is to do. It's everywhere and yet their actions are almost the antithesis of that in terms of that.

“Whether you like or dislike them, you give credit to Daniel Levy (former executive chairman) because that path has got a new stadium, new facilities, but taking a safe path.

"I think what they didn't realise that to actually win, you've got to take some risks at some point."

Asked by Ian Wright about his "frustrations" behind the scenes with Levy and the Spurs decision makers, Postecoglou revealed a conversation he had when leaving Glasgow's East End behind.

He said: "The one thing I remember when I took the job, and I remember telling my wife this, I had to make sure my frustrations didn't come out publicly.

"I'd seen Antonio [Conte] come out, Jose [Mourinho], even Mauricio [Pochettino] towards the end and it didn't end well. So, I go, ‘I've got to be really disciplined here and not say...’ maybe that does the club a disservice.

"I felt that that doesn't get you anywhere. I don't think Daniel liked that sort of laundry to be sort of put out in public.”

Postecoglou, who was shown the door by Nottingham Forest earlier this season after an eight-game spell, admitted he was trying to change the culture at the club.

Questioned on the ‘Spursy’ tag thrown at the club and a lack of belief in success, he said: “One hundred per cent there is, and that was the thing I was trying to break.

“And then you break that by winning something and what do you do?

"You tear it all up and you go again. And it’s not because it’s me, but what are you trying to achieve?”
