MELBOURNE: Tennis veteran Gael Monfils has pulled off an unbelievable upset by defeating world No.4 Taylor Fritz in a thrilling four-set battle.

The 38-year-old Frenchman showcased his experience, outclassing Fritz to secure a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory in just over three hours.

After his stunning win at Margaret Court Arena, Monfils celebrated with a playful dance.

Speaking on court after the match, the Frenchman expressed that he felt great moving around the court, showing no signs of slowing down.

"I've done the job," he said.

"It was an unbelievable match. Taylor is strong and serving well ... I felt like I could move great today."

The win marked a huge upset in the men's draw, the fourth-seed Fritz having not dropped a set in his previous matches.

During the second set, the American appeared to be in pain and called for the assistance of a physio.

While Fritz seemed to be struggling with his foot, the exact issue remained unclear.

Monfils kept his composure during the following two sets, to send the world No.4 packing.

The Frenchman becomes just the second man aged 38 or older to reach the round of 16 since 1988.

The first, of course, was Roger Federer in 2020.

"I'm a strong believer in myself, I believe I can do some damage," Monfils said following the match.

Monfils created history earlier this month when he won the men's singles at the ASB Classic in Auckland.

He became the oldest man to secure a tour-level title in 48 years.
