The 19-year-old became a fan favourite almost instantly with his heroic goal at Wolves. The midfielder made his debut in the 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Charlton Athletic in January 2023. Over a month later, he appeared in the Premier League for the first time against Leicester City. Now, two years later, Mainoo is one of United's most important players and has surpassed 50 appearances for them. As well as scoring the winner in the FA Cup final in May, the Stockport-born is now a regular in the England national team."I'm not saying he's of the same ability and he's that player yet, but he gives me the vibes of Clarence Seedorf," former United defender Rio Ferdinand said after his late winner at Wolves. "The way he can manoeuvre in tight situations, and the way he manipulates the ball, uses his body at times... beautiful."Earlier this season, Mainoo was reportedly one of four players deemed untouchable. After signing a new contract at Old Trafford in February 2023, it was reported that he was set to quadruple his wage to around £80,000-per-week in the summer. However, recent reports have indicated United are struggling to negotiate a new deal with Mainoo. Now, with the January transfer window open, a surprise move away has emerged with Chelsea supposedly keen. The Daily Mail have claimed that Enzo Maresca's men are leading the chase to sign the midfielder, should he leave. It's claimed a stalemate in contract talks with the player's representatives has alerted some of Europe's leading clubs.Should he not agree to new terms at United, it's understood that Chelsea will be in pole position to snap him up. Mainoo's current deal doesn't expire until 2027 but the club are thought to be keen on extending that deal. The player's stance isn't known but after emerging through the academy, it's difficult to imagine United without Mainoo. A quick glance through his social media activity and he has often posted positive messages to declare his dedication. Following the Manchester derby win last month, he put "Our turn," and put: "By any means necessary! God bless this football club," following the FA Cup win.United boss Amorim will also be desperate to keep Mainoo at the club. Journalist Fabrizio Romano explained in November how vital the midfielder is to the club, on and off the pitch. "Kobbie Mainoo is a crucial player for Manchester United owners, directors, and for staff," he told his YouTube channel."Ruben Amorim loves these kind of players. Kobbie Mainoo, Leny Yoro... these sort of players are exactly the direction he wants to take for Man United's future."
