Indian veteran Sharath Kamal is set to bid adieu to table tennis in front of a home crowd when he competes in the WTT Star Contender Chennai 2025, which begins at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Tuesday.

A five-time Olympian, Sharath Kamal announced that he would retire from the sport after the WTT Star Contender Chennai earlier this month.

The 42-year-old Sharath Kamal player is the reigning Commonwealth Games singles champion and was a flag bearer for the Indian contingent at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The WTT Star Contender Chennai 2025 men’s and women’s singles main draw will set a 48-player field, while the doubles main draw (men’s, women’s, and mixed) will follow a 16-pair format. The tournament will be live streamed in India.

Sharath Kamal will compete in the singles and men’s doubles with Snehit Suravajjula at the WTT Star Contender event.

India will field a record 19 players in the main draw after several Indian table tennis players, including national champions Manush Shah and Diya Chitale, were handed wildcards last week.

Olympians Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula, Ayhika Mukherjee and Yashaswini Ghorpade received direct entries in the women’s singles main draw. Sharath Kamal, Manav Thakkar, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Harmeet Desai also made it to the men’s singles main draw based on rankings.

The qualifying rounds will take place on March 25 and 26, with the main draw scheduled from March 27 to 30.

There will also be a strong international presence at the WTT Star Contender Chennai. Top international stars like Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto (men’s singles world No. 3) and Hina Hayata (women’s singles world No. 5) are all set to headline the singles draw.

Chennai is set to become the second Indian city to host a major World Table Tennis tournament after Goa, which conducted WTT Star Contenders in the last two years.
