Aussie Georgia Amoore drafted at pick six in WNBA Draft by Washington Mystics

Australian basketball player Georgia Amoore has been selected as the sixth draft pick the Washington Mystics in the WNBA.

The 24-year-old from Ballarat plays college ball for the Kentucky Wildcats, but played in the NBL1 for Ballarat Rush in 2019.

She played four years with Virginia Tech before making the shift to Kentucky for her final year, following head coach Kenny Brooks.

She averaged 19.6 points per game for Kentucky, starting 31 games in the NCAA season.

Amoore, a guard, has represented Australia at youth level in both basketball and 3X3, winning under age gold medals in both at Asia level.

On the WNBA's orange carpet, Amoore wore clothes designed by NBA star Russell Westbrook, who has a clothing brand called Honor The Gift.

Amoore said Westbrook designed her outfit and was amazing to work with since they first got together on a Zoom session last November.

They selected Notre Dame's Sonia Citron with the third pick, and Southern Cal's Kiki Iriafen with number four before Amoore was drafted.

UConn star guard Paige Bueckers was the overall number one pick for the Dallas Wings.

Bueckers had drawn comparisons to retired WNBA legend Diana Taurasi long before high school and her ascension to the first pick in the draft was almost a foregone conclusion after she hoisted the championship with her Huskies earlier this month.

"You don't ever want to assume anything in life," Bueckers told reporters after she hoisted the Wings jersey on stage in front of cheering fans at the Manhattan ceremony.

"It's a fresh start and we're all ready to do something special."

Bueckers and her UConn Huskies dismantled South Carolina 82-59 in the championship earlier this month, giving her the fairytale send-off she craved after overcoming multiple injuries in her college career.

She earned the Naismith Trophy in her freshman year but her collegiate career nearly derailed as she missed 19 games during her sophomore year due to a knee injury and sat out the entire 2022-23 season after tearing her anterior cruciate ligament.

Dallas fans will hope that Bueckers, a famously efficient scorer with terrific defensive intuition, will give the Wings a lift as they seek to recover from a dismal 9-31 season.

Towering centre Dominique Malonga, who was part of the silver medal-winning French Olympic basketball team, went second overall to Seattle.
