Sri Lanka's Viran Chamuditha Creates World Record In U19 World Cup, Becomes....

Sri Lanka's Viran Chamuditha created a world record and etched his name in the record books as he smashed the highest score by a batsman in U19 World Cups. The opening batsman slammed 192 off just 143 balls against Japan in SL's first league stage game of the 2026 U19 World Cup. Viran broke Hasitha Boyagoda's record, who scored 191 for SL against Kenya during the 2018 U19 WC. Batting with a strike rate of 134.27, Viran smashed 26 fours and one six in his knock. He added 328 runs for the first wicket with Dimantha Mahavithana.

Mahavithana also slammed a century and scored 115 off 125 balls. He hit 11 fours in his knock. Their marathon partnership came to an end in the 44th over after Mahavithana was run out. Viran was dismissed two balls later by Timothy Moore.

Viran and Mahavithana now hold the record for the highest partnership for any wicket in the U19 WC's history. They broke Dan Lawrence and Max Holden's record. The former England U19 openers put on 303 runs for the second wicket against Fiji in the 2016 U19 WC.

Among the openers, the record was previously held by New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra and Jakob Bhula. They added 245 runs against Kenya. Rachin is now a regular in New Zealand's national team.

Japan lost 3 wickets under a score of 100 in the big chase. They have their task cut out in the ongoing ICC event and will be aiming to win at least one game. They suffered an 81-run defeat against Tanzania in their first warm-up game. West Indies handed a big 229-run defeat to Japan in their second warm-up fixture.

Japan will face Australia in their next fixture on January 20. Defending champions Australia are four-time U19 WC winners. After facing the former champions, they will be up against Ireland in their third and final league stage game on January 22.
