Manchester United find themselves in a difficult position as their squad from last season returns to Carrington for the beginning of pre-season.

The hope had been for Bryan Mbeumo to be joining them, but that deal is yet to be finalised and has, effectively, halted any other moves that United could have made. That's a particularly big problem for their recruitment team, considering that a centre-forward addition is arguably a bigger priority than another No.10.

Both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggled in the Premier League last season and there are question marks whether the former will even be at the club when the summer window ends. Viktor Gyokeres was thought to be Ruben Amorim's top target to add some fire-power to the forward line, but it is now looking more and more likely that he will be joining Arsenal.

On Tuesday morning, The Athletic shared further information on Gyokeres' switch to north London, with the news outlet claiming that there was confidence on all sides that a deal will be struck. However, they added that this deal would likely end another pursuit which United could hijack.

It is claimed that, should Gyokeres sign for Arsenal, the Gunners will not be advancing their interest in RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. Our colleagues at football.london understood that Arsenal were working on both deals simultaneously but, owing to the finances involved, it appears to be either one or the other for Mikel Arteta.

Losing out on a move to Arsenal will surely be a blow for Sesko and it is unclear whether he is still willing to play for Leipzig after they dropped out of the Champions League. While United can't offer him that, either, they could give him the opportunity to play for a club with more prestige.

That would not be the first time that United have shown interest in Sesko either. While impressing as a 19-year-old at RB Salzburg in 2022, then-football director John Murtough met with the Slovenia international's team to discuss the prospect of signing the centre-forward.

As time has passed, it has become apparent that Sesko was very much in Red Bull's succession programme but his time at Leipzig looks to be almost up. With Arsenal out of the race - and a lack of centre-forwards available on the market - a move for the 22-year-old could be a wise call.

He has plenty of resale value, has scored goals consistently in his young career and has the experience and profile to lead the line as the sole striker. Finally completing this three-year scouting mission would be perfect for United as they would finally address the position which is likely giving Amorim sleepless nights ahead of the new Premier League season.

They would also be bringing in a striker with a point to prove in 2025/2026 and that is never a bad thing.
