Ex-Man Utd midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin accepts role at former club, 17 months after retiring

Five months after hanging up his boots, former Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has accepted a new role in football.

Morgan Schneiderlin had a reputation for being one of the top midfielders in the Premier League during his time at Southampton, where he won the club’s Player of the Season award in 2012/13.

The former France international was signed for United by Louis van Gaal for £25 million from Southampton in July 2015.

However, Schneiderlin lasted just 18 months at Old Trafford before being sold to Everton.

The highlight of Schneiderlin’s time at United came when Van Gaal led the team to FA Cup glory, although the Frenchman didn’t come off the bench as Michael Carrick was joined by Wayne Rooney in midfield.

Like Carrick, who has become United’s interim head coach, Schneiderlin announced his return to football on Tuesday.

Former United midfielder Schneiderlin has landed a new job in football.

The 36-year-old has returned to his boyhood club, Strasbourg, following Liam Rosenior’s exit to join Chelsea.

Strasbourg are owned by Chelsea’s owners BlueCo, so there’s a clear connection between the two clubs, as they’re part of a multi-club network.

After announcing his retirement in August 2024, Schneiderlin will take up the role of loan manager at the Ligue 1 outfit.

A statement from Strasbourg read, as per The Sun: “The Racing Club of Strasbourg Alsace formalises the arrival of Morgan Schneiderlin to the position of Loan Manager.”

Schneiderlin will have several responsibilities in the new role, which will see him work closely with sporting director David Weir.

At the top of Schneiderlin’s priorities at Strasbourg will be promoting the development of young talent and future players.

Schneiderlin has worked as a pundit since retiring from football, but now he is ready to step back into the professional game to help one of his former clubs.

On returning to Strasbourg, Schneiderlin said: “Returning to Racing is a tremendous joy and a great source of pride.

“It’s the club that trained me, and it holds a special place in my heart.

“My goal is to be there for the players, to support them, to help them in their development and to maintain a strong connection with Racing.”
