How Everton Have Lined Up Recently

Everton manager David Moyes shuffled his team significantly for the fixture against Man United, partly due to Jake O’Brien’s spot needing to be filled as he missed the game due to suspension.

This new way of setting up seemed to work well for Everton, and even though they didn’t manage to secure the victory, they managed to stay in the game, with stats showing an even match between the two sides.

First choice goalkeeper Jordan Pickford started in goal with James Garner dropping back from the midfield to take a spot in the back four, alongside James Tarkowski, Jarrod Branthwaite and Michael Keane. Idrissa Gueye started with Tim Iroegbunam in the defensive midfield, with Iliman Ndiaye, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Harrison Armstrong in the attacking midfield. Thierno Barry finished the lineup up front.

Everton still sit in a congested mid-table, where everything can change in just one game. However, Moyes still keeps his focus solely on getting a spot in European football, saying: “We’re not ready to give up our ambition to make Europe. We’ll keep going for it – why wouldn’t we?”

Crucial points continue to be dropped in important games, so Moyes will be looking to comfortably secure these three points against Newcastle, despite losing 4-1 to the Magpies when they last faced each other in November.

Reminiscing on the disappointing result, he said: “I hope we’re a bit more streetwise than we were that night. We were on the backfoot from minute one and we lost goals to corner kicks.”

Moyes confirmed that Charly Alcaraz picked up an injury in training, meaning the midfielder will be out for around three to four weeks. He joins Jack Grealish on the injury list, who remains out with a stress fracture to his foot for the foreseeable future.

Jake O’Brien will return to the matchday squad, after serving his one-match ban following a red card in the fixture against Bournemouth.
