Chennai Super Kings are going through a forgettable season with the five-time IPL champions on the brink of being eliminated from the playoffs race. Their season began on a positive note with an impressive win over rivals Mumbai Indians. However, ever since, the two teams have undertaken different routes with CSK slumping to the bottom of the points table while MI showing improvement with each passing game to become one of the top contenders to finish among the top four.

CSK have been plagued by indifferent form of their batters while they also lost the services of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad midway through the season to an elbow fracture. The legendary MS Dhoni, who stepped down as CSK captain ahead of IPL 2024, has been leading the franchise in the Gaikwad’s absence.

However, even under the five-time IPL winning captain, CSK’s playoffs hopes have continued to dwindle. They have mustered just two wins out of 9 matches played so far and routinely their auction strategy has been questioned.

Legendary Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist feels that it’s time for CSK to rebuild for the next season and Dhoni is among the players he feels has to leave the franchise, effectively suggesting it’s time for one of the greatest India cricketers to retire.

“He (MS Dhoni) has nothing more to prove to anyone in the game. He has achieved everything that there is. MS… well, he’ll know what he wants to do, but I’m saying, for the future – it’s going to cost me this, I know but perhaps he doesn’t need to be there next year. I love you, MS. You are a champion, an icon," Gilchrist said on Cricbuzz.

Gilchrist though feels CSK should keep faith in Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin for at least one more season.

“What a talent! Yeah, ageing but I still see a rockstar as Shane Warne dubbed him way back at the start of IPL. I am just going to go with him one more time," he said.
