Some of the English players are already in Australia and Australia have announced their squad for the first Test.Meanwhile, Pat Cummins' fitness has been a major issue already. The charismatic Australian captain, who made an outstanding debut as a 19-year-old, has been suffering from a chronic back issue over the years. Now at 33 years of age, Cummins is in the last lap of his career, and his primary goal will be to keep himself fit till 2027, when he can lead his team in South Africa to defend their ODI World Cup title. But this is not the case only with Cummins.Image Source: X/@ddsportschannelOnly one under-30 player in the Ashes squad: What does it signify?Players like Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith are well past the 35-year age mark and even the potential debutant Jake Weatherald has his 31st birthday this week.In contrast, the English touring team has only six of its 16 players on the other side of 30. This could be a challenge for Australia over the next few years, as the team needs to undergo a transition across multiple areas at the same time. They would require openers, fast bowlers, and a lead spinner, despite having some very talented individuals on their domestic circuit, such as Sam Konstas (opener), Lance Morris (fast bowler), Fergus O’Neill (Fast bowler), and Tod Murphy (off-spinner). It is not always easy to convert domestic performances to international matches.History set to repeat itself after nearly 20 yearsImage Source: X/@cricketcomauAustralia had faced a similar situation earlier, also most notably during the 2007 phase, when a host of Australian greats retired around the same time. During the early 2000s, Australia were nearly invincible, winning three consecutive ODI World Cups and enjoying great success as a Test team.Players like Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist have delivered record-breaking performances during that period to register their names permanently in the cricket history. They lost the 2005 Ashes and took swift revenge, winning the next Ashes 5-0 Down Under. The last Test of that series saw three greats, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Justin Langer walking away from the game at the same time. Adam Gilchrist also retired next year, closely followed by Matthew Hayden and Stuart Clark. Although Ponting continued until 2012, the team was severely weakened, as shown by their performances. The smooth transition that Australia needImage Source: X/@NeyfictionThe current team management has learnt from that and they are putting effort into building the next core. Konstas has made his debut during the last India-Australia series, whereas Murphy has already played Test matches in India, England and Sri Lanka. The current multi-format cricket structure is also a strong weapon for the selectors as they constantly bring in new blood in the limited over formats, especially in T20, to assess the temperament of the youngsters on the big stage. The current set of Australian players has also taken a selective approach to extend their careers. Mitchell Starc has recently announced his retirement from T20 Internationals, whereas Steve Smith has already retired from ODIs. This will help them to plan a smooth transition. However, the 2027 Ashes and the World Cup could be the swansong for many of the great Australian cricketers of this generation. Therefore, this Ashes is the most significant period of potential change for the Australian team since the post-2007 era, with a strong focus on avoiding the sharp performance dip that occurred then.
