With Donald Trump making a stunning comeback as President of the United States, fans of Indian cricket legend MS Dhoni flooded social media with 'Thala for a reason' memes.

The memes began trending after Dhoni's fans linked Trump's victory to the former India captain's iconic jersey number 7 - social media users shared theories and creative maths calculations to illustrate the connection.

For Dhoni’s fans, ‘Thala’ – which means ‘leader’ in Tamil – has long been more than a nickname. It’s a tribute to his legacy, as fans find uncanny connections to his jersey number whenever they can.

Most of the posts and memes feature Dhoni and Trump's picture that was clicked during a golf match last year.

One of the users did the math on the US election date, connecting it back to Dhoni’s famed number. “6-11-2024. 6+1+1+2+2+4=16. 1+6=7. Thala for a reason,” the user posted along with the photograph of Dhoni and Trump, and a meme in which Trump can be seen on the phone, saying, “We did it, MS.”
