Eagles News: The Jeffrey Lurie-Jalen Hurts relationship dynamic

0
It's March 2024. Just a few months prior, the Eagles had one of the most epic collapses ever seen in the National Football League. The birds went from being 10-1 after an epic win over the Buffalo Bills to the rest of the season going up in flames. They finished the year with a horrendous loss in the wildcard round, leaving us fans dazed and confused. They had gone from being Super Bowl favorites to an absolute laughingstock around the country in a matter of weeks.

The city was furious.

Drama swirled around the team. Tensions were high. Team relationships were questionable. Coaches were fired. Players allegedly showed up at teammate's houses to have confrontational conversations. The media ran WILD with pointing fingers and coming up with explanations for this cataclysmic implosion. Do you remember who the most fingers were pointed at?

That's right. Jalen Hurts.

So here we are, caught in the familiar maelstrom of accusations, anonymous sources, and doubts regarding QB1's ability to be the player, teammate, and leader he needs to be in order to take this team to success. This has sadly become a familiar place for us in Philadelphia. Yet again, we find one of our own caught in the spotlight of speculation as the talking heads from around the nation diagnose this team's issues from the luxury of their LA studios.

It might be easy to jump on the bandwagon and join the fray in hurling metaphorical poo at Jalen Hurts. To be fair, he has given them many reasons to be suspect of his ability to lead this team: His stoic press conferences. His unorthodox leadership style. How he seemingly doesn't give a rat's behind what people think of him. How he allegedly can't throw over the middle. Can't operate under-center. Can't be coached. Can't rely solely on his arm. Can't be a good a teammate. The list goes on and on.

At times, it feels like every other Tuesday, people come up with yet another reason to question Jalen. It would be easy to assume that it's all correct. To say that he's cooked and won't be bringing this, or any other, team any Lombardis anytime soon.

Except we know better.

We have history on our side.

Back in 2024, we had no idea that amidst the drama, Hurts and the Eagles were actually poised to make a run for their second SB championship in team history. Even up until the final match-up against Kansas City, the national media continued to doubt Jalen's ability to show that he's "the guy." Now, he's a Super Bowl MVP and played a role in shutting down one of the league's biggest dynasties of the 21st century.

Jalen Hurts has continually shown that he finds ways to overcome the haters and win. Yes, he gets knocked down. Yes, he falls short. He's not perfect, and he's certainly not orthodox. But somehow, against all reason, he gets back up and competes again. His college career is a remarkable testimony to how this is true. Since entering the league, he's been counted out, disrespected, and disregarded more than most. He's been placed lower on tier lists and tossed aside for every reason under the sun. And yet, he rises again from the ashes and finds a way to get back on top.

Now past performance is not always an indication of future results. You may flip heads 5 times in a row, but your next flip is still 50-50. That being said, football is more than just odds. This league has shown us time and time again that it's not always about the numbers, but it's about the nuance of the players who play the game; Their determination, their personality, their skill, and their ability to rise to the occasion and deliver on the big stage.

Jalen Hurts is clutch. He has shown that when the doubters are the loudest, that's when he performs the best. He needs that fire. He has to have that chip on his shoulder. He needs to prove them wrong.

So when we woke up Wednesday morning to that ESPN article, it might have been tempting to feel like the sky was falling. "Oh no!" You may have thought. "All our greatest fears have come true!" And in a sense, you're not wrong. This is a flawed team. There are changes that need to be made. Jalen does need to make adjustments for this upcoming year. But should we be worried? Should we assume that he's toast and that the alleged toxicity behind the scenes is a harbinger of another disappointing season?

Take heart friend. The answer is no.

By writing this report, all that Tim McManus and Jeremy Fowler have essentially done is add fuel to that fire. They have given Jalen the incentive he needs prove everyone wrong. We have officially gone from mild, passive murmurings to a clear challenge by the highest level of reporters in the league. The gauntlet has been thrown down. Now the eyes of the entire nation are looking with disgust at the player wearing #1 in midnight green and assuming that he doesn't have what it takes.

In reality though, all that they have done is positioned Jalen to take that Jordan-esque, buzzer beater jump shot to seal the deal for this franchise yet again. The stage is set. The ball has been inbounded and it is in Hurt's hands with two seconds to go.

My money is on that we're going to see nothing but net.

So I say, "BRING IT ON." Bring on the adversity. Jalen will rise above it. Bring on the doubt from the national media. He will prove them wrong. Bring on calling us underdogs. Hungry dogs run faster.

See you all at SoFi in February.
