The Olympics cash splash has begun, with the Queensland government laying down its plan to pump billions of dollars into new sporting venues and transport infrastructure ahead of the 2032 games.There will be a share of the $7.1 billion budget heading to regional areas for new and previously announced Olympic projects, including upgrades to the Bruce Highway.Here's a breakdown of what each region outside of Brisbane can expect.North Queensland: sailing, football, basketballTownsville's stadium will host football and co-host sailing with the Whitsundays.John Bryne from the Townsville Sailing Club said the city offered sailors conditions "better than anything down in the south-east corner".Townsville Stadium will host football. (Supplied: David Cook)"We've been running international events here in Townsville for years and years," he said."[We've got] pretty much everything we need. Certainly the most important thing is the water, the winds and the weather and that's where we're superior to Moreton Bay, particularly at that time of year."Preliminary football and basketball matches will be held in Cairns, with upgrades to Barlow Park Stadium increasing its permanent capacity to 5,000 seats."Realistically, a 5,000-figure stadium at the moment is probably sufficient," former Football Queensland director Alex Shroj said."But in seven years time you don't know what opportunities could pop up whether it's soccer, whether it's league, whether it's union."Tropical Queensland eyes cricketMackay's Great Barrier Reef Arena is slated to host the Olympic and Paralympic cricket if the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decide to include the sport in the Brisbane 2032 Games.Adrian Young says more money is needed to ensure the Great Barrier Reef Arena is up to standard. (Supplied)"The Great Barrier Reef Arena is the best regional cricket facility in Australia and it will be exciting to showcase it on the world stage," Adrian Young, chief executive of Harrup Park and the Great Barrier Reef Arena, said.Mr Young said while it would "create economic benefits" for the region, more money was needed to ensure the arena was up to standard by 2032.The state government has committed $23.5 million to fund critical upgrades to the venue." We want to provide a legacy project for our region … not only to attract events but to give local athletes a venue so they don't have to move to away to Brisbane or a major city. "The IOC will make its decision next year on what sports will be included in the Brisbane 2032 Games.Central Queensland: Rowing and athletes' villageRockhampton will host rowing, with the local Fitzroy River course set to see major upgrades.An athlete's village is also planned for the town's railyard precinct.President of the Capricornia Chamber of Commerce Jason Foss said it was a huge win for the region."The number of extra people in town for that event will be huge," Mr Foss said.Australian rowers head out on an early morning training session on the Fitzroy River in Rockhampton. "The region's peak tourism and economic development organisation said the Olympics would put Rockhampton on the world stage."I can personally attest that the Fitzroy River is one of the best rowing courses in the country," Capricorn Enterprise chief executive Mary Carroll said."Welcoming athletes and spectators from around the globe will not only highlight our beautiful destination but also provide significant tourism, economic and cultural benefits to our community."Darling Downs: EquestrianThe Toowoomba Showgrounds will receive upgrades, including new arenas and warm-up facilities, new stables and change facilities, and a lengthened cross-country course.That's a dream come true for 16-year-old rider Ellie Stenzel, who has been advocating for the "garden city" to host equestrian."It was quite surreal that all the hard work we'd put into this had come together," Ms Stenzel said.Darling Downs rider Ellie Stenzel has been advocating for Toowoomba to host the 2032 equestrian events. (Supplied)President of the Toowoomba Jump Club, Kylie Schooley, said the upgrades will be "an absolute milestone"."To actually have a legacy and not a pop-up is incredible because Queensland just does not have anything like this," she said.Wide Bay: ArcheryMaryborough, a town of about 27,000 people in the Wide Bay, will host archery, which will "make it easier for regional people to be able to go to events", said local Ruth Geros.Gold Coast cyclist Danielle Howard, who has been visiting Maryborough, said the event would be attractive for tourists like her."It would be great to share it amongst Queensland, not just Brisbane," she said.While funding for the $336 million Tiaro bypass has already been announced, the state government has prioritised the project in the 2032 Olympics plan.The four-lane road would redirect the Bruce Highway away from the flood-prone Tiaro, which sees about 10,000 vehicles pass through it every day.While he welcomed the project, local Chamber of Commerce president Chris Dale said there were concerns that less traffic in the town would hurt business.The Sunshine and Gold CoastsPreviously proposed sports for the Sunshine Coast include the marathon, race walk, road cycling and mountain biking.The "Horizon Centre" will be built in Maroochydore's CBD, which includes a 1,400-bed athlete's village and an arena.There are also upgrades planned for the Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike course and its stadium is set to have its capacity increased from 1,000 to more than 10,000 seats.Artist's impression of the proposed arena at Southport on the Gold Coast. (Supplied: City of Gold Coast)The Gold Coast has been tipped to host volleyball, beach volleyball, weight lifting, judo, wrestling and triathlon, among others.A proposed 12,000-seat indoor sports and entertainment arena at Southport is set to go ahead, but is funded through a partnership between the council and a private developer.The Gold Coast Hockey Centre in Labrador will be the official venue for hockey at the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.Upgrades to the facility will be funded by Gold Coast ratepayers.Gold Coast Hockey Association president Scott Beasley said it was a privilege to be one of the few local sporting clubs to benefit from the review."We don't know what the upgrade will look like, but we're well and truly happy to work with whoever we can to make sure the upgrade comes and we're one of the best centres in Australia," he said.An athlete's village is planned for Royal Pines Resort despite earlier plans to build housing for 2,600 athletes at Robina.
