ATP Brisbane Day 2 Predictions

The 2025 tennis season has kicked off and while all the focus is on the Australian Open, there’s still some important tournaments to be played before that, including this ATP 250 event in Brisbane, with none other than Novak Djokovic leading the field. While the Serb won’t be in action yet, there’s plenty of great matches to look forward to today.

Federico Agustin Gomez vs Reilly Opelka

Head-to-head: first meeting

Opelka has been struggling for a long time and will be looking to get back to his best in 2025. He could hardly have asked for a better first match of the season than facing the World #137. While Gomez played well in qualifying, dealing with Opelka’s serve is a completely different challenge and despite his recent struggles the American should have the edge here.

Alex Michelsen vs Christopher O’Connell

Head-to-head: Michelsen 1-0 O’Connell

Michelsen has been rising steadily for a while and should get his ranking up to Slam seeding range very soon. While O’Connell is a solid player, Michelsen beat him with relative ease a few months ago in Tokyo and the gap between them should only increase going forward. The young American should definitely have a clear edge here.

Mariano Navone vs Nicolas Jarry

Head-to-head: first meeting

Navone had a breakthrough 2024 season, but it was almost entirely based on clay result. He hasn’t really managed to find his footing on faster surfaces yet, while Jarry is more of an all-surface threat, even if his results haven’t been great since his run to the final at the Rome Masters 1000. On paper, Jarry should be able to advance comfortably here.

Jordan Thompson vs Matteo Berrettini

Head-to-head: Berrettini 2-0 Thompson

This is arguably the tighest and most interesting match of the day on paper; at his best, Berrettini was clearly the superior player, but while he showed some signs here and there that he is still capable of returning to that level, it’s Thompson, playing the best tennis of his career at 30, who is actually the higher ranked player of the two at the moment and is playing at home here. It’s a very tricky opening match of 2025 for Berrettini in his quest to return to the top 10 this year.

Prediction: Thompson in 3
