Fabrizio Romano Shares Major Gyokeres to Man Utd Claim

Manchester United were almost certain to close a deal to sign Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres if they won the Europa League with Fabrizio Romano '99% convinced' that a move would have gone through.

Fresh contracts have been made between United and the Sweden international's camp regarding a switch to Old Trafford during this summer transfer window.

Sporting want £70m for their star man

The Red Devils have turned their attentions to Gyokeres in their search for a new centre-forward this summer, with Chelsea winning the race to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town.

Romano revealed in a column for GIVEMESPORT this week that United are in contact over a deal for the 27-year-old, with the big-money deal requested by Sporting becoming more complicated after Amorim's men were beaten by Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final - subsequently missing out on Champions League football next term.

Had they beaten Spurs, Romano is confident that a deal for the 'world-class' former Coventry City man would have been confirmed. United believed a deal, which could cost up to £70m for the buying club, was likely to happen.

Speaking on his YouTube channel on Monday afternoon, the transfer expert said:

For Man United, we have to see financially how they can make it happen. With Champions League football, I'm 99% convinced that they were going to close the [Viktor] Gyokeres deal quite quickly. I think that was the feeling. Then no Champions League football. They lost the final in Bilbao, and so it's more complicated financially. But for Viktor Gyokeres, Man United called again, so let's see if they will be able to make it happen. But there were new contacts with the agents of the player.

Viktor Gyokeres 'Very Keen' to Join Man United

The Red Devils need to make deal work financially

Despite missing out on Champions League football - and any participation in Europe at all - GIVEMESPORT sources revealed this month that Gyokeres is still "very keen" on a move to Manchester should they satisfy him and Sporting financially.

While the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked with the Swede, he has never been the first-choice option for those Premier League clubs as they prioritise Benjamin Sesko and Hugo Ekitike respectively.

The chance to work with Amorim again - who he was so prolific under at Sporting - is a big pull and his astonishing goal record for the Portuguese giants is needed at Old Trafford given United only scored 44 goals in their 38 Premier League matches during the 2024-25 campaign.
