Manchester United finalised their first signing of the summer on Thursday after announcing the arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolves.

On June 1 United confirmed they had reached an agreement with their Premier League counterparts to sign the Brazilian international subject to a visa and registration.

The deal has now formally gone through and Cunha has signed a five-year deal at Old Trafford. United have the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.

Cunha has become the club's first signing of the off-season after United triggered his £62.5million release clause. He was a leading target and director of football Jason Wilcox has described him "as one of the most exciting and productive forwards in England".

Cunha will add goals and athleticism to United's attack, meaning he ticks a variety of boxes for head coach Ruben Amorim. He scored 17 goals across all competitions in 2024/25, including 15 in the Premier League.

Despite strengthening their attacking pool with the addition of the former Atletico Madrid forward, United do not want their attacking additions to stop there, with Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo next on their hit list.

United, just over 24 hours after announcing they had reached an agreement to sign Cunha, discovered Mbeumo had chosen Old Trafford as his preferred destination this summer. United made an opening offer for the Cameroonian last week, understood to be worth £55m, but it was rejected.

Nevertheless, discussions between United and the Bees have remained ongoing and the Old Trafford outfit are confident of making a breakthrough in negotiations in order to make Mbeumo their second signing of the summer. United would like to get the deal wrapped up in time for the former Troyes man to report to Carrington for pre-season training at the start of July.

In addition to wanting Mbeumo, United remain hungry to sign a striker this summer. Liam Delap was United's top target to bolster their No.9 options, but they were beaten to his signature by Chelsea, meaning they are now looking elsewhere for a goal-getter.

They have been linked with a collection of strikers in recent weeks, including Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen of Napoli. Gyokeres is keen to leave Sporting and Napoli want to sell Osimhen.

United are in desperate need of a proven goalscorer, meaning either Gyokeres or Osimhen would fit the bill. However, amid the fact they have signed Cunha for £62.5m and could end up paying around £60m for Mbeumo, outgoings will be required to fund the addition of a striker.

As well as bolstering their attack, United also want to sign a midfielder. Christian Eriksen will be leaving the club when his contract expires later this month and uncertainty continues to surround the futures of both Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro.

The Brazilian international is about to enter the final year of his contract and could be offloaded following United's failure to qualify for Europe next season.

United also have aspirations of signing a goalkeeper amid doubts about Altay Bayindir's future at the club. Amorim wants a shot-stopper who can challenge Andre Onana for the No.1 spot.
